Have you ever wondered where the water in a creek comes from? Turtle Creek is fed by springs, groundwater, and hundreds of small streams that all drain into one connected landscape known as a watershed.

A watershed is an area of land where all rain, melting snow, and groundwater flow downhill to a common stream, river, or lake. You can think of it as nature’s own drainage system. Every hill, farm, neighborhood, woodland, and wetland within a watershed is connected because the water eventually finds its way to the same creek.

The Turtle Creek Watershed covers approximately 288 square miles in southern Wisconsin. About 62 percent of the watershed lies in western Walworth County, while the remaining 38 percent is in Rock County. Throughout this landscape, rainfall and groundwater collect in small tributaries that eventually join together to form Turtle Creek.

Flowing more than 30 miles from the Delavan area to its confluence with the Rock River in Beloit, Turtle Creek is one of southern Wisconsin’s most scenic waterways. Its cool, spring-fed waters support fish, turtles, frogs, mussels, and countless insects, while its wooded banks provide habitat for deer, foxes, songbirds, great blue herons, and bald eagles.

For people, Turtle Creek offers a peaceful escape into nature. Paddlers enjoy leisurely canoe and kayak trips along its clear waters, anglers appreciate its healthy fish populations, and hikers and birdwatchers are drawn to its diverse landscapes. In every season, the creek offers something different—from spring wildflowers and summer paddling to brilliant autumn colors and quiet winter scenery.

The watershed is also home to farms, rural communities, forests, wetlands, and parks. Agriculture—primarily cash crops and dairy farming—has long been an important part of the region’s economy. Because everything within a watershed is connected, the way land is managed affects the health of the creek. Healthy wetlands help absorb floodwaters, native vegetation filters runoff, and good conservation practices protect water quality for both wildlife and people.

Turtle Creek eventually flows into the Rock River just south of the Wisconsin/Illinois border in South Beloit, IL. From there, its waters continue a remarkable journey through the Rock River, into the Mississippi River, and ultimately to the Gulf of Mexico. A single drop of rain that falls in the Turtle Creek Watershed becomes part of one of North America’s great river systems.
